    Description

Antique 1865-80 Victorian Oak Fire Screen Floral Needlepoint
    Antique Victorian Oak Fire Screen
Fire Screens were used in Victorian times to shield a Woman's face from the heat
Needlepoint Screen has a red background with floral decorations in the corners
Center has a Elks Head surrounded by a Motto which reads
VIRUTIS GLORIA MERCES which means GLORY IS THE REWARD OF VALOR
A Google search reveals the this is the Clan Motto for the Robertson Clan of Scotland
Base has 3 carved cabriole legs
    Screen is adjustable for height
Measures 61"H to top of pole
Screen is 20-1/4"W x 29"H to top of carving
    Condition
No damage or repairs to the wood
Finish is worn so will need a top coat or refinishing
Cloth lining cover on the back is frail and tearing from age
I see under the lining an old newspaper backing but can't see the date
Some of my photos has some sun glare marks which are not on the Needlepoint
