Antique Andirons - An Early Pair of Cast Iron Hessian Soldiers - circa 1850
A handsome pair of antique 19th century andirons.  These have had plenty of use at the hearth for many years and show good authentic wear and heat pitting overall.  We have cleaned the fronts but left the backs and the log holders as found.
These andirons are from the mid 1800's or perhaps a little earlier.  They are quite heavy, the weight before packaging is 39-lbs.  Both of the figures have a raised mark on the back but it is difficult to read, most likely a foundry mark.
Look carefully at the back of these Hessian Soldier andirons, they were made quite differently from other antique Hessian Soldier designs, and certainly vastly different from 20th century ones.
The log holders are very heavy and quite primitive in design each being 1-1/4" thick square bars, one with a right angle at the back and the other is curved, which is most unusual!  One log holder weighs 10 lbs, the other weighs 10-lbs. 9 oz.  Certainly with the shape and weight difference, these were not mass produced.
Most interestingly they attach with a primitive keystone fit, sliding down into the opening on the backs of the figures.  Certainly an early method of supporting the figures, we have not found another pair with this most simple support method.
Remember, these are far heavier than most Hessian Soldier andirons that you can find, weighing 39 pounds prior to packaging.  We will ship these in several packages because of the great weight.  They will be carefully and securely wrapped and shipped insured.
They are in wonderful condition with no damage.  They stand upright, secure and stable.

17-1/2" high - 8-1/2" across the feet - 22" front to back of log holders. Log holders are 6-1/4" high.
