Today we are delighted to offer for sale a rare and beautiful antique English Chinoiserie fireplace mantel!
This lovely piece was recently salvaged from a Boston Beacon Hill mansion demolition. We also have another grand mantel and pediment from the same residence coming up for sale. This exquisite piece dates to the 19th/early 20th century and is finely crafted and detailed. The mantel is expertly hand-crafted of wood in the Georgian 18th century style. The piece features a beveled top shelf, with dentil molding apron, and rounded apron with rectangular header, with molded beveled jams adorned with cascading Baroque swirls picked out in patinated gold. The whole is lacquered a deep and rich dark green and extensively hand-painted with whimsical and delightful Asian Chinoiserie scenes and floral sprays. Of special note are the scenes on the apron and header depicting Chinoiserie village scenes with lovely pagodas, flowers, and birds. The mantel has a pleasing, time-earned patina and can be used as it is, or lightly touched up if the new owner desires.
The mantel presents well and is in good antique, salvaged condition: it has some expected surface wear, scuffing, patina and scattered losses to painted finish. The lacquer has scattered scuffs and surface crazing. There are minor edge chips and losses to some carved elements. There are a few drilled and nail holes along the jambs from previous installation (easily filled or re-used). Carefully removed but sold as-found so please review all photos before purchasing.
