"In January 1999, the United States Mint began an unprecedented coin collection celebrating the 50 states of the Union. Each state is featured on a unique commemorative Quarter Dollar, issued in the order in which the states became part of the Union. Authorized by Congress and signed into law by President Clinton, it is the most ambitious coin program in U.S. history... These uncirculated coins are struck at the U.S. Mints in Philadelphia and Denver... The coins, which will never be struck again, are all included in this historic collection."  (Taken from the information printed on the back of the Volume I's title page.)

    About the Stamps
Several of the stamps in this collection are from the 1930's and 1940's. (See a sampling of the date of issue for the first 15 states below.) The stamps are not directly adhered to the sheets. They are individually enclosed in a small, sealed shell and that shell is attached to the sheets. Next to each stamp, is a description related to the state. Delaware, for example, contains two stamps. Here is the description for each stamp on Delaware's sheet (see pictures):
The first permanent settlement in Delaware
was made by Swedish colonists in 1638.
    This stamp,
    issued June 27, 1938
    , commemorates
the 300th anniversary of their arrival.
    Issued January 3, 1950
    , this stamp honors the
75th anniversary of the American Bankers Association.
Due to favorable laws, banking is one of Delaware's
    major industries.
